How to Set up a Propagation Grow Tent

Why Do I Need A Propagation Grow Tent?

Plant propagation is easier with a propagation grow tent designed especially for the job. A propagation grow tent is waterproof and lightproof, locking in the conditions you create. They use a mylar lining to ensure the maximum light reflection and coverage for your seeds and cuttings/clones. Clones and seeds need to be kept separate from your mature plants because they require higher humidity levels.

What Can I Grow in a Propagation Grow Tent?

The CultiLab V2 60 x 40 x 60cm “prop’ tent” makes an excellent pre-veg chamber for young cuttings and seedlings. Keep your young plants in this propagation tent until they are ready to move into the vegetative phase.

How Do I Set Up My Propagation Grow Tent?

Temperature & Humidity

Humidity

Image of an Air Comfort Hygrometer

During your grow tent equipment setup, think of warmer areas that you can place it to help you maintain between 75% & 85% RH (relative humidity). Adjust humidity levels by opening or closing the vents in the propagator and/or tent. You can also mist your plants with water to increase humidity. You can purchase a hygrometer to get a precise humidity reading. Leave the environment to settle for a while between readings. High humidity is essential inside the propagator as less water is lost through leaves in these conditions. This means that the plant has more energy to focus on rooting.

Temperature

The ideal temperature for propagation is between 21-26C. Ideally, you want your plants to be maintained at a steady 24C. If you’re struggling to stay within this range, try a heated propagator. You can also use a heat mat, placed under your propagator. Either option will distribute heat evenly across the propagator base, mimicking warmer weather.

If your growing environment is less than favourable, try a tube heater and a small oscillating fan. Both are ideal additions for a bigger propagation tent in a shed or garage, suitable to most seasons.

Humidity and Temperature go hand in hand. Invest in a thermometer to keep a close eye on your levels. Alternatively, buy an integrated hygrometer and thermometer.

Root Booster

A root booster, like GrowDog Rugged Roots, will create a more robust, complex root network with more secondary roots.

Plants with strong root development are faster-growing, healthier plants with impressive yields.

Using Root Booster

To improve your propagation success rates, use the following process:

  1. Soak plugs in a rooting solution for 15 minutes when you begin propagation.
  2. Continue to water the booster into your plugs once weekly until your plants are ready to move on to Veg.

Propagation Grow Tent Lights

Garden tip: HID (High-Intensity Discharge) lights are far too intense for propagation.

During the propagation stage, your seedlings need maximum light to fuel photosynthesis. They are not strong enough to handle any extremes of heat. It is recommended to keep the lights on 24/7 in propagation. We sell propagation tents kits with a 6500k (blue) ‘daylight’ grow light, which is perfect for early growth.

Being on 24/7 while seedlings develop, means that growers favour propagation lights that are cheaper to run. The following T5 and Streetlight propagation lights are some of our best sellers and what we offer with our propagation grow tent setups.

Ideally, you’ll position your light about 6-inches from the top of your seedlings. Use cable ties or ratchet hangers attached to the support bar in your tent to achieve this.

T5 Propagation Lights

T5 propagation lights are perfect for your delicate seedlings. They’re low intensity, low heat and have lamps available to output the spectrum to suit all stages of your plants growth. An integrated reflector on the T5 increases the lumen availability by 300%, diffusing light deep into the plant’s foliage.

StreetLight LED Propagation Lights

The Streetlight LED grow light range are a solid-state, silent operating, LED grow light that generates very little heat. The fanless design means they’re silent and last longer. Generating very little heat means you can get closer to young plants, without scorching or other heat-related damage. This also makes them perfect to use with propagators to get seedlings and cuttings off to a strong start.

You’ll use multiple Streetlight LED’s to suit the size of our application and hang them with Streetlight hangers and power with a daisy chain cable. The hangers allow you to swap LEDs out to change the light spectrum you’re offering.

Simple daisy chain cables allow you to use a single power socket and share the power across units.

Rooting Hormone for Clones

To use:

  1. Pour rooting hormone into a sterile container before using.
  2. Take your cutting and dip the entire cut area of the plant cutting into the gel.
  3. Place the dipped cutting directly into a grow plug and then the propagator.

Garden tip: Using a rooting hormone improves the chance of your cuttings taking root and increases the speed they develop, making them stronger. Most plants take root in 7 – 10 days, but some could take longer. You’re ready to transplant into Veg when you see roots coming out of the bottom of the plug.
