What is the Smart Garden Forge Wall Trough?

The Smart Garden Forge Wall troughs are ideal for beautifying any garden space. Outdoor wall troughs bring colour to anywhere you want it to. The right mix of flowers can work to be visually attractive as well as enticing beneficial insects to visit your gardens and vegetable plots.

Available in different sizes, the premium Forge wall trough is constructed from strong and durable, coated steel wire. It is quick and easy to mount to most surfaces. A coco liner is included to hold your compost, help preserve water and control drainage. You can purchase extra coco liners as and when your trough needs a refresh.

Forge Wall Trough sizes available:

  • 19 x 61 x 61 cm (24") - 26-litres of compost
  • 23 x 76 x 23 cm (30") - 30-litres of compost

  • 22 x 120 x 24 cm (48") - 40-litres of compost

Planting Up The Forge Wall Trough

The wall trough's hold up to 40-litres of compost and are really easy to plant up. Cutting holes in the coco liner allows you to maximise coverage by planting hanging plants in the sides of the trough.

Garden tip:

  • More plants means more watering. Larger numbers of plants will deplete water reserves faster.

Using readymade soil-perlite mixes or adding perlite to your preferred planting medium provides better water retention. The porous, inert volcanic rock acts to hold water for your plant's roots to access, allowing longer periods between watering.

Garden tip:

  • Add perlite so it makes up around 10-50% of the total volume of potting mix. Add 10-20% perlite if you want better water retention and don't plan on using a lot of extra nutrients.

Can I Grow Food Crops in Wall Troughs?

Wall troughs are versatile. They're great for bringing a splash of colour, they can also extend your growing space for more of your own food.

Wall troughs are great for growing your own nutritious crops. Homegrown food often tastes much better than mass-grown, imported food. If you grow enough produce to freeze, you can be using your summer surplus all winter and in to the next spring.

Hanging Cherry Tomato varieties like Cherry Falls or Tumbling Tom, the Blackberry 'Black Cascade' and Strawberries are all examples of food crops that suit growing in wall troughs. Growing away from the floor can help to limit issues associated with slugs and snails. If you have issues with slugs and snails this organic slug killer will help you.

How do I Attract Beneficial Garden Insects?

Intermingling food crops with flowers that attract beneficial insects can help you pollinate and control pests that thrive on your vegetables and fruits. Plants like Lobularia (sweet alyssum) have small white flowers to attract beneficial insects, like parasitoid wasps, that help control garden bugs and pests. Bidens and Diascias are great for attracting bees that will then find your fruits to pollinate.

For anyone looking to grow their own flowers or fruit and veg, starting seeds in propagator sets early in the year can give you a real head start. When the plants are ready for transplanting planting in larger gardens, use a poly tunnel with growhouse shelving or a walk in growhouse. Whatever space you have available, get a jump start on spring and choose from our range of growhouses.
