What Is Westland Orchid Potting Mix Enriched with Seramis?

The Westland Orchid potting mix is a specialist Orchid compost with essential nutrients. It is ideal for healthy growth and abundant flowering. Added pine bark and Seramis® creates an open soil structure for improved aeration, drainage and water management.

Seramis® provides water management as it absorbs and slowly releases water and dissolved nutrients. It promotes an open, porous soil structure that supports your plant’s root zone. It helps to avoid soil compaction and supports strong root growth. It works to increase airflow and humidity to create a beneficial microclimate.

The slimline, resealable 4-litre or 8-litre pouch is designed to stand upright so it is easy to find on shelves or cupboards, where space is tight.

Why Do I Need Westland Orchid Potting Mix?

Orchids will benefit from re-potting when the media has broken down or when outgrow their pot. This is best done after flowering has stopped.

Even if you’re re-planting in the same Orchid pot, you’ll want to refresh the potting mix in spring or summer.

Garden tip:

  • We recommend you check the re-potting advice for type of orchid you have. This page is intended for general advice only.

  • How Do I Use Westland Orchid Potting Mix?

The following procedure helps you to pot and re-pot your Orchids:

    • Choose a pot with just enough room for the roots.
    • Fill one third of the pot with orchid potting mix.
    • Place the orchid in the pot and carefully spread out the roots.
    • Gently hold the plant by its stem and fill around the roots.
    • Tap the pot to settle the potting mix–do not firm down.
    • Orchids may need anchoring in the pot with a stick or with wire.
    • Re-pot just after flowering or during the period when new growth and new roots appear.
    • Remove dead and shrivelled roots but leave potting mix attached to healthy plump white roots. Do not worry if a few roots grow outside the pot.
    • Re-pot only when growth starts to suffer.

How Do I Feed and Water With The Westland Orchid Potting Mix?

    Watering Your Orchids

Orchid roots will rot easily if they are kept in wet conditions. It’s essential to water sparingly, ideally once a week. Specialist Orchid Water is a great option to feed and water orchid plants to keep them healthy and flowering for longer.

Orchids prefer high air humidity. Applying a specialist mist spray 1-2 times a week to the aerial roots and foliage will help replicate the plants natural growing environment.

    Feeding Your Orchids

During the growing and flowering season, Orchids benefit from specialist feeds, diluted in rainwater. Feed every second watering in the active growing season (spring/summer) and every fourth watering in the winter.

Orchid Plant Growing Tips and Advice

The following advice intends to give you some general pointers for better Orchids:

    • Orchids need bright but filtered light so it’s best to avoid placing them in direct sunlight.
    • Different species of orchid require different temperatures, so choose a suitable room in the house depending on the type of orchid you are growing.
    • Most orchids require a rest period during winter when watering and feeding should be reduced.

General Advice For Using Westlands Potting Mixes

    • Store in a dry, frost free place away from weed killers and other garden chemicals.
    • Reseal the bag after use.
    • Use in a well-ventilated place and avoid breathing in any dust.
    • Always wear gloves when gardening and wash hands after use.
    • Not suitable for Ericaceous (lime hating) plants.
