Have you ever wondered what’s the right length or number of lights to buy for your Christmas tree? Or how many LED lights will give your tree ample light coverage and illumination levels?
Not all LED string lights have the same amount of LEDs per metre. But there is a general rule, a kind of golden ratio for choosing LED Christmas lights for your Christmas tree. This ratio is:
- Buy at least 100-150 bulbs or 5 metres per two-feet of Christmas tree.
So, if you have a six-foot tree, you’ll want around 300-450 LEDs or a 15-metre lit length of LED string light. If you have a higher ceiling and can fit in a larger, seven-foot tree, add another 5-metres, and use a 20-metre lit length, LED string light.
What Is The Lit Length Of An LED String Light?
The lit length of an LED string light is defined by the length of wire that holds the bulbs. The lit length refers to the length of cable between the first LED and the end of the string light. It does not include the length of cable from the plug to the first LED bulb.

Control The Flashing Pattern & On/Off Times – Set & Forget LED Christmas Lights
If you want set-and-forget Christmas lights, then choose a set of LEDs with a controller.
LED lights with controllers automatically activate at the same time every night. They’ll turn on for 8 hours, then deactivate for 16 hours from the point you first turn them on.
For example, if you wanted your lights to activate at 15:30 and run through to 23:30 every day, switch the lights on at 15:30 on day one, then leave the lights powered on until you’re finished with them. The controller will then take care of the timing and automatically activate and deactivate your lights for you.
Buying LED lights with a controller allows you to select the flashing pattern of your LEDs. Most LEDs with controllers have a selection of up to eight patterns.
