What Are Thompson & Morgan Cornflower Jubilee Gem Seeds?
Thompson & Morgan Cornflower Jubilee Gem Seeds grow plants that freely produce dense, deep-blue heads of large, double flowers. The plant's vegetative growth results in compact, bushy plants.
Cornflowers were Once a common sight in cornfields. These hardy annual plants look superb in summer borders and interspersed in flower beds. The Cornflower "Jubilee Gem's" intensely coloured blooms of deep-blue are excellent for cutting and a magnet for bees and butterflies in the garden.
Garden tip: Culinary note: Cornflower petals are edible and are often added to salads as a colourful garnish or sprinkled over omelettes or added to pasta.
Where Do Thompson & Morgan Cornflower Jubilee Gem Seeds Like To Grow?
Cornflowers are easy to grow and love being in beds and borders in full sun where possible. They'll also self-seed throughout gravel gardens to form natural drifts.
The plants generally grow with a height of up to 40cm (16") and spread up to 30cm (12").
Garden tip: Deadhead faded flowers to prevent them from self seeding, should you wish.
How Do I Sow Thompson & Morgan Cornflower Jubilee Gem Seeds?
Direct Sowing Cornflower Seeds

Garden tip: Choose a position in full sun on well drained soil, raked to a fine tilth.
To direct sow Cornflower seeds:
- Sow seeds thinly, at a depth of 3mm (1/8") in drills spaced 30cm (12") apart.
- Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods.
- Germination usually takes 14-21days.
- When cornflower seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 15cm (6") apart.
Alternatively, grow cornflowers indoors from August to September for early summer flowering next year.
To sow Cornflowers indoors for next year:
Garden tip: When sowing Cornflower seeds, don't exclude light, as this helps germination.
- Sow cornflowers on the surface of a good quality seed compost at a temperature of 18-23C (65-73F) and cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite.
- When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to move outdoors.
- Overwinter cornflower plants in cool, light, frost-free conditions before planting out the following spring, or growing on in pots in a greenhouse.
When Should I Transplant & Harden Off Thompson & Morgan Cornflower Seedlings Grown Inside?
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. Transplant young plants to final positions and plant 15cm (6") apart.
Gradually acclimatise young Cornflower plants to outdoor conditions when all risk of frost has passed before planting outdoors, in any well drained soil, in full sun. Water regularly until plants are fully established.
