WHAT ARE THOMPSON & MORGAN THOMPSON 'AQUA DULCE CLAUDIA' BROAD BEAN SEEDS?
RHS Garden Merit winner and gardeners' favourite. Broad bean 'Aquadulce Claudia' is the best variety for autumn sowing for an early harvest the following spring. The Slender pods 23cm (9") long are full of succulent white-seeded, flavoursome beans. Expect a plant height of 1 metre (39") and a spread of 45 cm (18").
Garden tip: Beans, like all other legumes, are excellent for adding nitrogen to the soil. You can easily plant them with corn, potatoes, celery, cucumber.
Garden tip: Broad beans are cheap and easy to grow from seeds. They are the perfect vegetable for beginners or children; they're happy in the ground, on raised beds or in pots. Broad beans are an exceptional vegetable choice for modest plots, delivering high yields from a comparatively small area.
HOW DO I SOW THOMPSON & MORGAN THOMPSON 'AQUA DULCE CLAUDIA' BROAD BEAN SEEDS?
- Sow between November and December to overwinter. Cloche protection may promote more robust plants.
- These beans can also be sown individually in 5cm (2in) pots or seed trays between January and March to transplant if circumstances allow.
- Grow in full sun on rich fertile, well-manured soil that has some shelter from powerful winds.
- Plant your broad beans in double rows set 23 cm (9") apart and leave space of at least 60 cm (24") between each of your double rows.
- Broad beans, in each row, should be sown 5 cm (2") deep and 23 cm (9") apart. Don't forget to water well; germination usually takes around ten days.
- Harvest your broad beans when the pods are full and the seed is still soft. Best eaten when freshly picked, home-grown crops are far superior to those found in supermarkets when it comes to flavour.
Garden Tip: Reinforce your plants by placing a support cane at each corner of a double row. Tie in with string, which will benefit those in incredibly windy gardens.
Garden Tip: Keep well-watered and be sure to hoe regularly between rows. Deter blackflies by pinching out the growing tips after the first flowers have set pods. This will also encourage other pods to develop.
