WHAT ARE THOMPSON AND MORGAN TOMATO 'AILSA CRAIG' SEEDS?

Tomato' Ailsa Craig' is mainly known for the outstanding flavour of its fruit, which ripens early in the season. This well-known favourite delivers medium-sized tomatoes with a consistent size and shape and an exceptionally deep red colour. This vigorous cordon variety will grow well in the greenhouse or outdoors. Your Tomato 'Ailsa Craig' tomatoes should reach heights of around 200cm (79") with a spread of 50cm (20").

Garden tip: Great for companion planting. Try growing tomatoes with French marigolds basilchives or mint for pests such as aphids and whitefly.

HOW DO I SOW THOMPSON & MORGAN TOMATO' AILSA CRAIG' SEEDS?

Sow indoors from February to March. Sow outside between March and April:

  • Sow your seeds on a suitable, free-draining, damp seed compost surface, then cover with a light layer of either compost or vermiculite.
  • Place your seed trays in a propagator. Keep the temperature constant at approximately 15-20C (59-68F) until germination occurs within 7-14 days.
  • When seedlings gain two true leaves, transplant them over to separate 7.5cm (3") pots of compost. Grow them on at a minimum temperature of 15C (59F).
  • Acclimatise your seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting from the first weeks of June. Your tomato plants should be roughly 20cm (8") in height.
  • Choose a sheltered position in full sun in the garden with fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Space your plants 60cm (24") apart when transplanting.
  • Support the plants as they grow. Push a (5') cane into the soil next to each plant. Tie the main stem to it with soft garden twine.

Garden tip: If growing in a heated glasshouse, tomato plants can be transplanted either toward the end of May or when the first flowers begin to show. Alternatively, plant directly into the greenhouse soil. Allow three plants per grow bag or one per 25cm (10") pot.

Garden tip: If growing outdoors, wait until any risk of frost has passed before moving your tomato plants into the garden.
