WHAT ARE THOMPSON & MORGAN BLAUHILDE CLIMBING BEAN SEEDS?

Thompson & Morgan Blauhilde Climbing Bean Seeds grow in delicious clusters of stringless, purple, fleshy pods. These colourful pods will reach up to 27 cm (11”) and can be picked between July to October. This attractive, tasty variety also has good resistance to Bean Mosaic Virus, so you can be sure of an excellent yield. Heights will reach 180 cm (70") with a spread of 30 cm (12”).

Garden Tip: Climbing beans are also available as dwarf varieties suitable for growing in pots. They are also known as climbers that will crop reliably during hot weather, unlike their runner bean counterparts.

Garden Tip: Try growing beans with Nasturtiums to draw aphids away from your crop

HOW DO I SOW THOMPSON & Morgan BLAUHILDE CLIMBING BEAN SEEDS?

Sow climbing bean seeds indoors from mid-April to transplant later or directly sow outdoors between May and July.

Sowing Indoors

  • Sow bean seeds at 2 cm (1") deep in 7.5 cm (3") pots or trays of free-draining seed-sowing compost. Place in a propagator at 12-25C (54-77F) for 7–10 days until germination.
  • Once germinated, grow on in cooler conditions until any risk of frost has passed and the plants are big enough to be transplanted.
  • Gradually acclimatise them to outdoors over 7–10 days before planting outdoors in well-drained soil in full sun with shelter from the wind.

Sowing Outdoors

  • Sow two bean seeds per station at 5 cm (2") deep and 23 cm (9") apart.
  • Plant in rows 60 cm (24") apart, or where space is limited, even try growing them on a support structure that you should put in place at the time of planting.

Garden Tip: Support climbing beans as they grow with twiggy sticks, wire, or netting. Use fine mesh to protect pea crops from bird and pea moth damage.

Garden Tip: Water regularly and thoroughly in flowers to improve crop yields.
